Why Your Google Business Profile Matters More Than Your Website
For most local businesses, the Google Business Profile generates more leads than the website. When someone searches for a service in your area, the local map pack — the three listings that appear before the organic results — is the first thing they see. And that map pack is driven almost entirely by your GBP.
If your GBP is incomplete, outdated, or unoptimized, you're invisible to the majority of local searchers — regardless of how good your website is.
Tip #1: Choose the Right Primary Category
Your primary business category is one of the most important fields in your Google Business Profile. It helps Google understand what type of business you are and which local searches may be relevant.
Be specific. 'Roofing Contractor' ranks better than 'Contractor.' 'HVAC Contractor' ranks better than 'Construction Company.' Use secondary categories to capture additional service types.
Tip #2: Complete Every Single Field
Most businesses fill in the basics and leave the rest blank. This is a mistake. Google rewards completeness. Fill in your hours, service areas, services list, business description, attributes, and any other fields available to your category.
Your business description should include your primary keywords naturally — 'We're a Long Island roofing contractor serving Nassau and Suffolk County...' — without keyword stuffing.
- →Hours — including holiday hours
- →Service areas — every town you serve
- →Services list — with descriptions
- →Business description — keyword-optimized
- →Attributes — veteran-owned, women-owned, free estimates, etc.
- →Website link — to your homepage or a conversion-focused landing page
- →Phone number — a local number, not an 800 number
Tip #3: Upload Photos Consistently
Strong, current photos help customers evaluate a local business and make the profile more useful. Upload photos of your team, your work, your equipment, and your business location when applicable.
Don't upload a dozen photos once and never touch it again. Consistent photo uploads signal to Google that your profile is active and relevant.
Tip #4: Get More Google Reviews (and Respond to All of Them)
Review quality, quantity, and recency can strengthen customer trust and can contribute to local visibility, but reviews are only one part of Google's local ranking systems.
Build a review request into every completed job. A simple text message with a direct link to your review page, sent within 24 hours of job completion, will dramatically increase your review volume.
Tip #5: Post Weekly
GBP posts are like mini-ads that appear directly on your Google listing. Use them to promote services, share recent projects, announce specials, or highlight seasonal offerings.
Keep your profile current with accurate information, fresh photos, and useful updates. Posting can help customers see that the business is active, but posting frequency by itself does not guarantee higher rankings.
